In order to reap the souls of fallen heroes, you need to lure them into your underworld first, then defeat them.

The higher the upgrade level of the underworld gate, the more heroes you can lure via the button "Lure hero..." (one additional hero a day per upgrade level, up to a max. of 5 a day).
