In the mages' tower mages are trained. They defend your fortress.

The special feature of mages is that the attacker sees that mages are defending the fortress, but not how many. This makes attacking a fortress a tactically difficult thing to do.

An alternative way to train mages is to use the + button at the top of fortress view.
