In the mages' tower mages are trained. They defend your fortress.

The special feature of mages is that the attacker sees that mages are defending the fortress, but not how many. This makes attacking a fortress a tactically difficult thing to do.

Alternatively, you can tap the bottom-center mage icon to train mages.
